The Social Network of Intellectual Collaboration (2002-2004)

We assume a weighted but undirected link between two researchers whenever one acknowledges the other on a published research paper. The weight corresponds to the inverse number of authors. Additionally, we assume an undirected link of weight 1 between every pair of authors. Weights are additive.

We have used all acknowledgments from all published research articles published in six journals: The Journal of Finance, The Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial Intermediation, the Journal of Money, Credit & Banking, and the Journal of Banking and Finance.

Interactive Network

For computational reasons, we show the giant component only and remove links that occur only once and which at the same year have a weight smaller than 1 (i.e. one-time co-author ties remain). Nodes are color-coded: red nodes are pure authors (authors that are not acknowledged in the dataset), blue nodes are pure commenters (acknowledged commenters not having authored a paper in the dataset), while yellow nodes are commenting authors. Node positions according to an adapted Fruchterman-Reingold algorithm. Visualization using vis.js.

You can:

  • Hover over a node to see metrics
  • Highlight the social neighborhood on click (indirect neighbors colored in black)
  • Move nodes
